The large glowing eyes of the owl of Athena, Greece’s goddess representing wisdom, stare into the eyes of the beholder of this fine silver coin. Produced by private mint SilverTowne for the South Pacific island nation of Niue, this two-dollar coin features a rare reeded rim that makes it stackable with other coins.
The Athenian Owl on the reverse of the coin is grasping a tree branch, with depictions of a crescent moon and olive branch are in the textured background off to the side. Beside and below the owl are the coin’s weight and purity with “AOE” which stands for “Alethia Omo Eternia” (“Truth, Honour, Forever”).
Flip the coin over to discover Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with “TWO DOLLARS” and the year of issue. The tiara worn in this design was a gift from the “Girls of Great Britain and Ireland” to Queen Mary in 1893. Queen Mary then gifted the treasure to her granddaughter in 1947.
Although most of us will never be able to visit Niue, you can purchase this Niue coin right now from Royal Bull.
