On September 11, 2001, almost 3,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, VA across the river from Washington, D.C. and in a thwarted attack and following plane collision in a terrain in Shanksville, Pa. Hundreds of fearless first responders risked their lives to rescue others and many died while acting their sworn responsibility. After the attacks, people all over the country and around the earth came together to remember and respect those which died in the attacks.

The medal’s imagery is symbolic of the braveness, sacrifice and strength of those individuals who died in the terrorist attacks; the fearlessness of those who risked their lives to rescue others that time; and the persistence, flexibility and hope of those who lived.
